The total goal of Resources First Foundation's Save a Ranch program is two fold. First is the Adopt an Acre effort designed to simply raise money to help the agricultural land trusts in the West for the purchase of conservation easements on working ranches.

The second is to educate folks on the many challenges facing Western ranches. There are numerous environmental, economic and cultural benefits that a working ranch brings to a community, state and wildlife habitat. However, ranches are under major pressures from development to taxes, this in turn threatens local economies, wildlife habitat, the health of the land, and the lives of the hard working individuals that steward the land through their operations. What is a conservation easement?
In its most basic form, a conservation easement will protect land against future real estate development, industrial use, and many potential commercial uses. A conservation easement generally allows you to continue current uses, including, for example, residential and recreational use, agriculture, forestry, or ranching. Read More »
How it Works
When you contribute to adopt an acre, your contribution will be combined with other donations to help purchase a conservation easement on a working ranch, initially in Wyoming.

A conservation easement is a contractual agreement regarding the land's future use between the rancher and a land trust, and each has to agree to its terms. The conservation easement will be purchased by the Wyoming Stock Growers Agricultural Land Trust, which holds the easement and monitors the land to ensure that its conservation values are protected forever.

In addition to conserving the land, the purchase price may allow the rancher to pay off the mortgage, buy out a disinterested family member, or otherwise manage the ranch finances so they can 'keep the family in the family ranch'. The rancher is expected to donate a portion of the easement's value, so when you donate to save an acre, you know that the rancher, too, has some skin in the game and is motivated by stewardship. And if that rancher ever sells the land, the new owner will be bound by the terms of the conservation easement, so your contribution to save an acre really does save an acre - forever.

Save a Ranch is a collaborative effort of the Resources First Foundation, the Private Landowner Network and the Wyoming Stock Growers Agricultural Land Trust.
